I got a Crosman parts order yesterday and found that I had forgotten to order a valve screw.  I went to the hardware store and found out I have another mystery size that can not be found.  I ordered some from Crosman, but now I will have to wait a week to continue the project I'm working on.  Has anyone ever modified this valve for a different screw ?  I'm thinking maybe tapping it out to 8-32.

If you are talking about the screw in the bottom of the tube that retains the valve, it is a 5-40 x 3/16". 8-32 would be a little bit large.  Better to use a 6-32 x 3/16".

Have converted a few 22xx valves to 8-32. I use an 8-32 low head socket head cap screw....the head size matches up to the hole in the tube really well.

You should be able to source something from McMaster-Carr... I bought a box from Acklands Grainger .... I'm in Canada.

If you cannot source them, rather than see you install a "hardware store" variety screw of questionable quality, drop me a pm and I'll send you a couple on the house.

Doing a custom fit you can probably get away with fitting an 8-32 screw.  But when Crosman is assembling a hundred guns a day the 5-40 screw is there to give some slop and ease all the alignment issues that occur with the valve and main tube and transfer port tube.

I'll probably do the 8-32 if I can find a proper screw.

Looks like them. :)

For the curious, some math regarding that screw and valve retention can be found here;

I considered being a rocket scientist at one point in time, but it gave me a headache.  I just want to ensure that the valve does not fall out of the tube when I change cartridges.  ;)
