accurizing the pump guns

What do you think are proven mods to accurize the 1377  (I'm keeping mine a pistol, However, I realize that adding a stock and laying off the coffee might help...).

I'm particularly interested to find if anyone feels that free floating the barrel helps or not.  Does anyone feel any of the aftermarket breeches do a superior job?  (compared to each other)

By "accurizing" ... what's the goal or measurement for the guns ability to be accurate?

If you use the 10 meter/one-hole target type criteria, the stock 1377 pistol needs some work to get close to that level.

I'm happy with a recent build that I'll call my "non-build" ... stock plastic breech, trigger job, shotgun F.O. bead on front sight, polished barrel with improved crown and for looks, Davio's wood grain grips and pump arm. It's lightweight and a little muzzle heavy which helps point & shoot technique. It shoots RWS Basics in one or two holes (off the bench) at 10 meters.

Most of the better 1377s are pretty decent out of the box with a lil help as above :-*

I would suggest you go look at the gallery and look at some of the guns the members have made from a stock 1377. It will blow you away. Here is a target bull I shot, sitting on my stool in the garage at 20 ft. with my 1322. Add a stock to the pic of the pistole. I have over $300 in it and it works great!
We need to keep going and have fun doing it.

I didn't mean to say "how do I make my gun accurate?"  What I am wondering is what are some of the mods that out there that seem to consistently reduce group size.  I've checked the gallery, and it has blown me away  :)  I've also noticed that a large amount of the mods seem to have more to do with personal preference, than improving accuracy.

(I'm really interested to see if anyone thinks free floating the barrel does anything positive for accuracy with the 1377)

Ok, there are dozens of mods that all together, make the gun a great shooter, cosmetics are secondary.

Too many to list here, you need to search this forum with key words like transfer port, barrel crown, barrel leade, extended probe, etc. These are the types of mods that work and the trigger mods are a must or all your work will be spolied by a 5 pound trigger pull.

As for free floating barrels, it's mostly a personal preference, none of my 13xx or 22x guns are and they all shoot waaay better than I can. The better mods use an aftermarket barrel band and hinge pin for the pump linkage. The barrel band has a set screw but, you can leave it out if you want (free float).

Are you looking for accuracy off a benchrest or offhand?

Offhand accuracy, obviously, has quite a bit to do with the shooter. Comfortable custom grips would be a top priority for me if I was interested in offhand accuracy.

Bling does not insure accuracy. In fact, I would sell off a pretty gun that will not shoot well. Barrels, valves, springs, breeches, pellets and so on can be evaluated on a bench or in a vise. Sometimes a simple barrel recrown or a polishing of the bore can make a difference. The right pellet for your particular barrel can turn a terrible grouping into something to be very proud of. A weak spring may cause pellet velocity variation and need to be replaced. And so on...

I have not demonstrated to myself that free floating a barrel improves accuracy. It may for some. I think it looks pretty tough, though. I have pistols that have free floated barrels and those that use barrel bands and they can all shoot better than me.

my DBO kit seems pretty accurate to me . a 1701P trigger group  is in it's future , the stock trigger will catch/stutter at different points in the shot cycle . i can pretty consistently hit crab apples at 10-13 yards , but i think the trigger change will make a definite positive difference , especially at longer distances . BTW , i'm a fairly new shooter so i'm sure my particular gun would shoot more accurate with a quality shooter pulling the trigger .

Once you do the 1701 trigger you will never go back to the drop sear style. I've got them on all 3 of my Crosman pistols. It started with the 1377. My 1377 shoots quite well for what I do with it. I found a 12" lothar barrel for it and it out shoots me by far.

Brekfast,
I didnt make it clear but I was thinking benched, in that I was thinking of accuracy levels far in excess of what I am capable off hand.

Bocomomark

Bgm,
Can you tell me more about your barrel? (I.e. information that might facilitate the purchase of one  ;)

bgmcgee

I bought it off the green forum from jpmoneyshot.  I had to do some work on the lead end as it wasn't made to take the probe with an oring. Used a dremel and got it working quite well.

Bgm,
I've been searching about trying to suss out this 1701 trigger conversion.  Am I correct in my understanding that I only need to order the trigger assembly (2220-103)?  Or will other parts likely need to be ordered from crosman (trying to put together an order for this Tuesday...)  I don't have a problem filing my stock hammer, and fettling about with my existing parts.

DBOdude

Bocomomark , for the 13xx based guns you will also need a solid hammer or the stock one can be modified . you may or may not have to do a slight bit of filing on the sear or main tube and a different hammer spring . here's a few links to threads about it that i've read too many times  :-*

That's the right part number but like dbodude says you will need a solid hammer. I got my hammer from Mellon but it took forever. You can do the jb weld mod or contact one of the guys here to see if they will do it for you. Quickster made one for me, exceptional job. As far as grinding off the sear a little or opening up the slot that is hit or miss. I did the sear mod before I even installed the trigger it was easy and I figured better safe than sorry. Go read the sticky about thus mod everything you need to know is in there that's how I got mine done.

Have ya polished all the trigger parts yet? The stock triggers can be made very nice with some work and it costs nothing but time.
