Just bought a new 2240 and am curious if dry firing it will damage the valve assembly or valve stem?

Nope...blast away!

I use the air blasts to kill bugs that get inside my screened in patio and hang out on the screens.

I even read a story somewhere about a guy who made little SALT shot shells for shooting flys with his 40!!

I have not read of any problems " dry firing" A CO2gun.

I tried making salt 'shells/casings' but it didn't work as well as just shooting the salt straight out of the barrel.
I use a 760 (yes, the pink one) for shooting salt at bugs and the occasional lizard (takes their heads clean off like a shotgun!)....
You just have to cock the gun and close the bolt before you pour the salt down the barrel, otherwise you could get it into the transfer port and in the valve.
Oh, and sea salt seems like it would work best, but it doesn't. It just turns into a puff of powder. You have to use fine grain salt for best results.

The blast works if you are up close, but if they are too far out of reach (i.e. a fly at the top of a window, or a spider on the roof part of my screened in enclosure) the blast doesn't do anything to them. That's when you use the salt!

That's what I said when I first read about doing it!!  Wonder about long term detrimental effects on the barrel. Salt is a corrosive after all.

That's where the 760 comes in, smooth bore, and probably $9 to replace... but if you are in a low humidity area or fire a pellet or two afterward it shouldn't be a big issue.
Near McMinnville, Oregon

Have me many an airgun :), count is 102 now...

woody67

That's exactly why I use the 760!

Of course, all the crosman barrels are pretty cheap... I just recently paid $19 for an 18 inch barrel WITH a steel bolt and handle directly from crosman.
It wouldn't really matter if I messed up a barrel, but I won't use a good gun for the salt regardless!
