Dude, you can still learn!  I did and so far I still have all my fingers and other important pieces parts.  Go for it.  No excuse.  You have plenty of time to perfect your skill set.

I've never wanted something so useless in my life.

I agree with Carl. Im 57 and only used a lathe at work a short times, they only had it a year or so before i retired. But it was a fun tool. :-*

Well Mr. Mike looks like you've got yourself a heck of a friend magnet. You probably thought you had a lot of friends before, but I would guess you have a brand-new hundred or more new ones. Keep us updated on all the neat parts you'll be making.

I may be getting old, but I can still whip anyone twice my age and half my heavy.

how much was that thing? i went to home depot a couple months ago and asked if they had any a mini lathe and the girl didnt even know what a lathe was! they didnt carry them BTW. they had a mini drill press and other "mini" bench top tools but no lathe....

Give it its own good, sturdy bench, bolted down securely as suggested.  You won't regret doing so.   :-*  (From someone with literally no mechanical know-how, but knows those with it - Dad's automotive store used to have a Machine Shop when he was in business.  ;)

It ain't like it used to be but, eh, it's do.
