The 357 Jigsaw Puzzle!

Don't know why these 357's keep me so amused, but now that I have done a couple of barrel swaps and plan a couple more I guess I will keep on messing with them. I received this one from a CAPOF member. Here is a pic of what you will get in to once you go inside. Not as bad as it looks, if ya don't mind fiddling a bit.

I have to admit, that I brought this one and another one I had apart up to my Dad's house in Va. The hope was that he would take a shine to one of them, but I was only able to put one of them together as the valve crapped out on me on one. Also, swapped barrels as the modified barrel was a hair to long and rubbing on the mags.

Anyway, once my Dad shot the custom 2240, he wanted nothing to do with the 357!! Oh, he shot it a few rounds and went straight back to the 2240. Guess that's alright too!! Parts order on the horizon for a new valve and seals.

I think i remember you did a post on that Rich your dad still has the 2240 lol. Yeah i think we are the only two that likes messing with the 357 i had my old one apart a few times i think it's fun.

You're not alone fellas . . . . . The original 4" 357 is from the 80's and prolly has in excess of 2500 rounds thru it.
The 357-6 I snatched from a "floor" parts box at a gun show recently for $15 - the cylinder loader was missing.
Both are darn good target shooters !!

Nice Ceejay i really didn't think we were the only two i just wanted to see who would chime in. Im also a big fan of the 38T and 38C.

I have 2 of the first gen. 357-6. I just bought some parts from Crosman to try to get at least one of them going. Any tips on what to look for when I take it apart? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

there are some on aa classifieds cheap i think you get a 38c 38t and 357 for $75 shipped
thats about $20 a gun
the guy selling them always has some low priced vintage guns

yes it is and it still took some time to sell them as they are sold now
they sold but he has this one fs now which is still cheap because its working

Take the cover off slowly and carefully. Snap a couple of pictures of what it looks like with the cover off before removing any parts. Two things to look for are the catch lever block (a piece of hard rubber that acts as a spring for the latch). It gets crapped out so you may want to replace it. Also, when reassembling you need to make sure the indexing clip is in the right place. You can also order the valve from the modern 357 and it will fit the older versions. Crosshairs has done it and if I remember right, he even gained a tad in fps with the switch.

Thank you very much for the info. I did buy the new latch suport rubber and the indexing cylinder plate. I did not know if it would work so I only bought on of the valve assemblys,  number 357-050 $13.92.  They show this  hole assy. for the new 357. Great, now all I need is time to put it in. Thanks again.

Well Mr. Rich I wondered when we might see one of your reworked357s.  Might we be looking forward to a 22 caliber conversion?  I mean rebuilding them stock and just adding a modified barrel doesn't permit much of a challenge for your talents.  LOL you had once said that you were thinking about 22 conversion, so let's make it happen.  You understand that I will offer moral support and encouragement only, as it is well documented what happens if I began to open or even think about opening one to get to the insides.  LOL.

Well Lee, a .22 version may just be a possibility this winter. I need a 6 shot mag to make that work. Next time I see one for sale on ebay or the classifieds I'll snag it and make the alterations. I do not think I have enough meat on the 10 shot mags. I have a barrel I can use and a willing 357. All I need is the 6 shot mag and a bunch of time!!!
