I'd just get the full CNC set up.

Then I would acknowledge all orders, answer queries promptly, give accurate delivery times and ship them on time. There should be a market for that   ;)

With cash in hand, I would hire arkmaker and a few helpers to design a shop and spec the equipment. They would run the shop and I would do the sales and marketing. We would shoot to be the GMAC of the U.S.!

Man, if you could make a living making parts at home......what could be better?

Of course, you'd have to do a lot of testing of the parts.    ;)

the only way you would come close to making a living is to go abroad advertising on the yellow or open an ebay store,even then you will probably just make enough keep your hobby going
with those tools i could make some different parts i know will turn a profit 25 parts 15 will cover my machines 10 parts will bring in anther $1000
that 25 parts i know there is more than 25 people in need of these parts.i should find out what a machine shop will charge to make around 200 but it wont be the same as me doing it myself
there are enough people out there who like to turn $50 items into $300 items.especially with discountinued/obselete stuff
i saw a flat top piston for a crosman 1400 go for $40.it probably cost less than $3 in materials.now mac-1 is making a $11 replacement part for that and that probably uses less than $1 in materials

Yes, prior to going into IT diagnostics/sales full time I had spent all my working life as a production/operations manager working on short lead time bespoke components. Sure, capacity can be an issue at times but communication and planning is key. There is never any excuse for not communicating with customers.

I can agree with both sides of these arguments/comments on cust service except... the parts makers who just want to run the lathe and the mill and not interact with humans should just say so on their websites, then we would know the rules, right?

I still don't get what DC's ordering/shipping method is... you go to his site and order and then, you make a phone call to get an order number? and then, you call him again so he he can tell you how to pay him? and then... I'm worn out already!

I like this method as found on an AR15 custom parts makers site;

"Hi, I'm glad you found my site. You would not be here if you were not already expert at the exact modifications you are making and which parts you need. I can't help amateur gunsmiths and my lawyer won't let me, so don't ask how to get your AR to shoot 500 rpm, I won't answer. My parts are avaialble quickly whether in stock or made from scratch, that's because all I do is make parts. My wife will enter your order the same day you send it to us, by mail or on line. She has not missed one order in 12 years, she won't miss yours either. Delivery is 7 to 10 days and sometimes sooner and my wife will send you the UPS tracking number by email if you give your addy to her. I would be glad to chat with you at gun shows, shoots and get togethers, but not when I'm making parts. Last, all of the parts shown on this website are available. There are no dead links, obsolete parts or phantom prototypes. If it's here, I make it. Thanks for stopping by and good shooting to you."

Yes Brian,

You have hit the nail on the head there. I couldn't agree more.
