Just out of curiosity..., how much did you spend on your mods for the 2240/13xx platforms ?
How much :D ??? Wow ! And for a $50 airgun :-*

Well normally we just don't discuss this sort of stuff in public as it could be pretty embarrassing. But to be honest, I have probably spent three or four times what the gun originally cost. Maybe more than that on some of them.
There, I said it out loud and I feel better now. :P
Carl
waaaaaaaaaaay to much ;D does that work for ya?

x2 - That is a reasonable cost estimate of excess.

OK, $50 gun. What is the first thing you want to do? Trigger is too heavy? Start there and go to search here on the forum and look for trigger mods. Then you don't like the rear sight? Need a new breech? Steel, brass, SS? Now you have your trigger and your new breech. Now you need a sight? Open, peep, red dot or a scope? Get the idea? It does not stop and there is no know cure. QUACK,QUACK,QUACK!!!!
Yup, sounds familiar ! I have already bought the steel breech (more than half of the price of the gun), so looking for a scope now... And I can think easily on some other must have mods too....
Never enough .....
The breech I want costs more than the stock 2240! So there is double.
Add a pistol scope (a cheap on) and there is triple.
Oh don't forget the 1701P trigger frame and flow-thru bolt and handle. Now we've quadrupled the cost.
Add a TKO and a Power Adjuster and now we are at 5 times,
oh, oh......let's not forget and nicer barrel band and the crowning jewel, a winged gas cap from Mr007. Now we are at 6 times!!
300 bucks and with the exception of a couple of the parts, I was talking the lower/moderatly priced components. Top shelf goodies can easily add another 150 to the scoreboard.......200 more if you want a LW barrel...........so, 500 bucks into a pistol is not out of the realm of the 2240 :-X
God, I love this hobby!! ;D
This came from a poll about 4 years ago on another forum, thrown out to their general poulation. It's only a rough indicator becuase it relies on respondents to self report but... interesting anyway that above $500 was nearly as many folks as $100 and below...
Mods (in $$ above the cost of the gun, 2240, 2250 and 1377)
$50 - $100 32
$105- $200 47
$205-$300 39
$305-$500 26
More than $500 29
I bet that's about right!!!
Somewhere around $80 for a steel breech and lpa site.

I think I have quite a few at more than $500 spent but due to the rarity of some of the parts paying through the ass has to be expected. Also having to import from the US adds to the cost a tad.
So I too am of the school - as much as its costs plus a bit more too.
Financial sense and this hobby don't really mix. But you can't beat the feeling of having a sorted gun that you have just built.
I don't keep track because if i did I wouldn't buy the parts I want,I buy them then say what the he!! afterwards. :) :) :)
a dollar 380.
I WAS going to say "Not much"....then I started reading....and thinking...and adding.... :o
The 2540 has a Stace breech..$112...Grips...$75...marauder barrel...$80+shipping....1701 trigger frame...$44 (IIRC)....and that "other" thing we don't talk about here...another $70...a few "bits 'n bobs" jacks it up higher.
Think I paid $85 + shipping for the original 2240 as well. :(
AND....that's only ONE! :o
Bought another the other day at Walmart...$63...wonder what IT is going to end up costing. ???
I guess we're all in the same boat hmmm? :)
Al
You know what th >:( ;De description of a boat is: "A hole in the water that you pour money into"
A Crosman pistol is a hole in a barrel that we pour money into :-* IT NEVER GETS FULL ;D

Yes it was my Stace guns that are the big money ones. Mainly because I had to buy complete guns to get the parts. Took ages too.
Is there pic of your 2540 one here ? I thought I had tracked all the Stace guns on CAPOF, obviously not.
Was pretty sure I posted a pic...found it here;

Cheers Al, if I didn't try to buy it from you I must have missed it ;D Very very nice too :-*
I tried to buy every gun with a Stace breech that I have seen I think, no one would sell. It was only the beady eyes of ED 1377x that spotted one on the yellow that got me the breech I was after.
Now I know Grant a bit better he has sold me another one so that one has worked out massively cheaper to build.
My Stainless 2240 is the big money gun but really can't remember what it cost me. All of the Don C stuff was the bulk of the gun's cost. Both sets of grips were about 60 bucks or so.
Mike
I think the big money was in the light phase shifter that turns it from gold to silver! ;D
Every time I see Mike's stainless beauty I drool. I love the polish on that trigger frame....it's sick!!
I have one 2240 that's got over $500 invested in it, including the original cost of the stock gun. Maybe I shouldn't use the word "invested"...since I probably couldnt sell it for a quarter of that. That's not counting the effort put into the build either. All the other 22xx and 13xx's I have are in the middle of that range. I hang my head in shame....but with a silly grin on.

That is why you do not ask a Crosmainc how much he spent on a build. There is no end. It's like the bunny, it keeps going and going and going. But we love it! That is why we do it, to make it better. Why? because we can!

Well I'm just getting started but, I bought my 1322 back in the early 80's, I know I didn't pay $50 for it then so I have a ways to go :)
Thanks to finding this forum I think it's going to cost a little more than what I paid for it . . . now where to start?
Well let me just say this! I told my wife if something ever happens to me , don't sell ANY or my air gun collection for less than 300.00 to 500.00 ! All though I have told her OH that parts didn't COST that much!! ;D ;D
My excuse is that I hate money. Can't get rid of it fast enough! Mostly, I like to throw it at air gun stuff just to have a nice clean wallet. ;D

For myself btw.., half of the price of the gun is spend on a mod and I'm now at the half of the costs I would like to spend, at least... :-*
Wondering do i add the cost of the 7x 10 lathe upgraded to 7x14 and the tooling to the cost of my mods? ???

Yep. And GOOD LUCK with that!
Cheers,
Ha ... I have over $300 just in Stace parts on this one ...
My brother-in-law was over the other day and my 2400kt was sitting out. He knows I collect airguns. He was like, "How much was this one, 4...45?" I was like "Thousand?!?" He said yea. Apparently he thought I was spending 4 grand on each airgun. I'm like, "Dude, that was about $350."
But yea, that's about the average I'm spending on each Crosman gun, between $300 to $350. And if you think about it that's really not bad at all, considering AR15 guys spend THOUSANDS. Not to mention a $300 modded out Crosman pistol is going to be pretty high quality if you do it right.
About $450... kinda sorry that I added it up.

Customizing seems to follow the old 90-10 rule.
The first 90% of the work takes about 90% of the budgeted resources, time and money.
The last 10% of the work takes another 90% of budget.
It's a lot easier to spend $50 or so at a time, than is is to spend $200 all at once.
As costly of a hobby as it is, it's actually cheaper than most adult hobbies. Because you save a lot of money by doing a lot of the work yourself, customizing your own mods, and by the simple fact that airgun shooting is inherently inexpensive.
Also, we have chosen CROSMAN of all manufacturers, who have probably THE cheapest airgun platform on the market. So instead of starting off our project with a stock base model high end airgun that costs several thousand dollars, we get some skin in the game by shelling out $59.95.

Well stated, so true agninja :)
:-* :-* This si SO TRUE !! :-* :-*
Well put Ag and its a solid proven starting platform. We don't have to put as much money into them as we do,but we do anyway. ;) :D ;D ;D ;D ;D I really don't want to add up how much I just recently spent on parts.
Man, I have so much in my AG's my head hurts (as does my wallet). But it is what it is. I have a Disco valued @ 750 with all the mods and still have 4 more pieces to get. Same with my .25 2260/Disco/13xx build, me and the boy's 13xx builds. Future .177 pcp pistol build. WHEW!!!!!
Joe---broke as a joke---AG hobbyist. :-* :-[
Joe you forgot the one after that, and the one after that, and the one after that no folks the record isn't skipping. :D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
You are wrong Tom, just wrong. Now I have to plan the next 3 builds and plan on which AG's I want to buy. Been looking at the new MAC35's.

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Do I have to add in the spare parts from crosman?
I ordered a few parts that added up to about $40, and figured I would get some odds and ends of spares that I should have on hand.
Seals, and springs and a front sight hood, and on and on. Over $100, total. Just bits.
Grips might be my downfall. I do like Walnut. Hmm, I need to find some nice grips.
Gets pricey fast. A 40.00 order becomes a 100.00 order real fast. You start having thoughts go thru your head while you are putting a price list together and then when on the phone making your order. Happens to me constantly.
I don't get a tally on my builds, if my wife doesn't know what the final sticker shock is I can always sneak in more parts for another build...well, maybe not always! :(
I actually keep a spreadsheet for each of my builds so I know how much I've got in to them.
Here is what I have in my 2289 build minus the various scopes I have.
Crosman 2289 Gun & Steel Breech Total: $110.90
Crosman Parts Order Total: $92.53
Total Internal Modifications: $74.29
Total: $277.72
I have a little over $700 in my Drozd IZH 661 bulk air build. This hobby can be kind of expensive depending on how far you want to get into it but all hobbies are. Money well spent in my opinion. I've gotten 100's of hours of enjoyment out of all of my guns and I'm sure there are many more to come. It get's kind of addicting is the only downside if there is one.
Cost of my Throw Down entry.
2240 $57
2300S Valve $14
12" .177 Barrel (24"cut down) $17
Aluminum Breech $35
Extended probe bolt $12
Shroud (used) $35
Wire Stock and PA $49
Pro Top $35
1701P Trigger group $38
Scope $36
Total $ 318
