Title: my DBO kit arrived today !!!
Post by: DBOdude on August 06, 2013, 10:32:44 PM
ordered it from PA last thursday and it arrived here about 2 1/2 hours ago . i put the steel breech on . the accushot high rings and a CP 4-16x40AO wally world special . i also did my first mod (besides the breech) by taking the rubber o-ring out of a scripto lighter and putting it on top of the transfer port between it and the barrel  :-* .

my opinion .... and keep in mind i'm a newbie .....  :-* :-* i like it . my biggest complaint is about the stock release button already making my thumb joint area red . i don't really need to take the stock off , but i'll give it a few days to see if i get a little callous or i may take a file to it to round it off . that's my only complaint because i did a lot of research and i'm aware of the slight bit of slop on the stock (that can be fixed with tape) and also the slop in the barrel band (and that can be fixed easily for free with a soda can) . my fat sausage fingers have plenty of room to load pellets under the scope with the high mounts , i think i woulda been fine with medium mounts , but it's cool with the highs on . it DOES NOT LIKE the pointed pellets supplied with it , 8-9 out of 10 wanna get caught when the breech is closed . plus word on the forums is that those pellets aren't that accurate anyway . no problem though , i was gonna pick up a tin of CP domes at walmart anyway . anyhow , since i kinda knew about it's shortcomings (that are easily fixed) and the release pin is a easy fix/mod , i have to say i'm %100 happy with the DBO kit .  :-*

the centerpoint scope is ... OK . but the turrets aren't what i was expecting and i'm kinda not liking the forward AO location . i'll give it a few days/weeks and see if i get more comfortable with it , but i', kinda wishing i'd gotten something with side AO adjustment off the bat . the view looks mostly OK to my eyes but it does seem to want to get a tint of white or cloudiness sometimes , mostly on highest powers and far away . i'm suspecting that's to do with me having to learn to practice better eye placement rather than the scope at this point . the mil-dots look fine to me , but i'm a newbie .

so i went out and shot it several dozen times . the 20 pack of targets it comes with are very nice to have . i think i'm about 15 yards from the target . i did 3 shots initially to see if i could make a group and surprisingly i made one about the size of a lemon fairly well centered over the bull and about 3 inches high  . i lowered the turret a few times and can now hit the bull about 2 out of 5 times and my group is down to about egg size . i'm sure after i get a tin or 2 of good pellets in it along with the time to improve/get some shooting skills that it'll do much better .

so i'm very happy with the gun . as for the scope ...... i'll give it some time to see if it grows on me . i do plan to do some mods over time , heres my list in no particular order ....

24 inch barrel
A.C. flat top valve and piston
1701P trigger group and a solid or modified hammer
crosman power adjuster and springs
hollow bolt probe
possibly a TKO

i'll be doing some freebie mods too  ;) :-*

and heres a few pics to show that it happened . LOL

Nice... and if you are mostly leaving the stock on the gun, your grip frame should already be drilled & tapped for the standard 6-32 grip screws if you want to drill and counter-sink (not too deep) on the grip area of the stock.

And for just a few $ from Crosman parts dept., get the 1701 pistol grips and 6-32 oval head screws, now you have a "1322" pistol as well as the DBO gun.

you know we need a range report
it will serve as a baseline to the future mods coming ;)

Lookin good!  I like the new Centerpoint logo on turret covers. Looks like they made them a little more tactical looking.  I don't think you could go a whole lot lower on the mount, the objective bell may not have the clearance.

Don't forget to add a barrel band to your list!

just wanna double check .....
the part number for a .22 caliber 24 inch barrel is 2260-003 .... correct ?
and what should the price be ?

also ... can i make the hole for the pivot pin 1/4 inch rather than 3/16 ?
i can't find any 3/16 bolts with a long enough shoulder , but theres plenty of 1/4 inch options .
Title: Re: my DBO kit arrived today !!!
Post by: 1377x on August 09, 2013, 01:14:33 AM
somewhere @$16 shipped and i have seen guns with a 1/4 pivot but dont know anything else about it
if you have a 1/4" bolt or dowel stick it over the pivot hole that will at least give you an idea on how it could look
Title: Re: my DBO kit arrived today !!!
Post by: DBOdude on August 09, 2013, 04:43:26 AM
thanks 1377x . $16 shipped huh , i'll be placing that order tomorrow  :-* that should take it from 440ish on 10 pumps up to the low 500's and also reduce the report a lil ...... not that i find it loud to start with . but i'm sure the spl will go up when i get it modded to 650ish or a hair more  ;)

i looked at a pack of drill bits that had a 3/16 and 1/4 next to each other . but i'll wait since i don't need to take it apart that far yet . i'll probably just wait and order one when i get my f/t setup .

Nice set up booty.....the longer barrel and f/t setup will make nice power  :-*
not sure I'd go 1/4" for the pivot.....that will take alot of meat off the pivot tine holes.....some folks have had that part fail (oval) but usually it work hardens real fast

be sure to order other parts like o-rings transfer port gaskets, discovery hammer spring
shipping is flat ratebest to get what you can in one order
like wyoman said the 1/4" hole will take some meat out
imo as long as the flat top or adjustable piston isnt over adjusted all the hole will not wear
in my experience hanging on the pump lever and over adjustment of the adjustable piston has been the only thing to cause the mounting holes to elongate
if you have to pin a valve to keep it from moving back your piston is over-adjusted

Post by: DBOdude on August 09, 2013, 07:10:35 PM
thanks guys , just ordered the barrel , it was $14.10 plus $4 shipping and could take 2-6 weeks to get here . ordered before your post 1377x and didn't order any other parts this time . i spent all i can afford on it this month already , LOL  .  :-[

i did do a few other small mods . i put the fuzzy velcro between the main tube and the pump arm . it really reduced the pumping noise a lot , down to a dull quiet thump  ;) and i used electrical on the trigger frame to eliminate most of the slop between it and the shoulder stock . i can still wiggle it some putting a little muscle into it but it seems solid other than that and is certainly doesn't have the 1/8 inch or so of play that was in it to start with . both of these are necessary minor tweaks that i was expecting to do and i'm still very happy with the DBO kit . BTW .... got some CPHP in the tin from wally world and haven't had any loading issues or hangs/catches like i did with the pointed ones supplied with it , and they do seem more accurate  :)

just keep in mind the other stuff with your next order
the barrel went up $2.01 since i last bought one. they was $12.09+$4
good fix on the pump arm. the nutters around me stop and look when i am pumping, instead of running so i never thought of dampening the noise.
the stock wobble i had some packing peanut that i put in the stock where the bottom of the grip frame touches. surprisingly it stopped the wobble completely. not bad for a free fix

6 days later and the barrel is now in my hands ! ;D :D
i do appreciate the lady at crosman giving me the 2-6 week warning ... just in case . but i'm much much much happier it wasn't necessary this time  :-* .
it was nicely protected in a triangle cardboard box with packing paper in it .  ;)

Cool beans on the barrel... and your new handle (DBO) fits your new airgun addiction IMO :-*

thanks BDS . i'm really liking the new barrel . after sighting in the scope with the new barrel i'm shooting minute of crab apple at 10 yards about 8 out of 10 times . keep in mind i'm a not a great shot and have a lot of room for improvement in my shooting skills .

i'm a happy fat dude  :-*

Cool  8)

The more you shoot it, the better it will get, you will be at "minute of MM candy" at 10 meters 9 out of 10 shots before you know it  :-*

OH NOOOOO !!!!!!

M&M's are way too tasty to use for targets  :-*

i've been out in the field behind the house several times seeing how steady i can hold the crosshairs on rabbits , i haven't shot any and i'm not sure that i will , but if i do they are in TROUBLE ! but i do need to make some shooting sticks . i'm all over the place standing alone , but if i have a tree , post or something to steady myself against i can dry fire with them in the scope and is looks like my aim stays good . gotta get a lot more practice before i feel i can make a definite , humane quick kill shot ...... IF , if i decide to have some rabbit or squirrel for dinner . i'm enjoying the DBO soo much :)

the new barrel seemed to sight in easier/quicker than the stock one , but i'm thinking thats probably just because i'm getting used to the gun and scope .

the scope , it's ok , but i still find myself thinking side AO would be much more comfortable/less cumbersome to deal with and it does want to get cloudy view sometimes .......

 :D ;D

Get one of these, and if you can knock it down at 10 meters you are good to go for small rabbits or squirrels (real kill zone on rabbits is behind ear, about same for squirrels)

These are everywhere... Cabelas, Big 5 and other stores so you don't have to order online

well , i have a unexpected problem , but it's no biggie . the pivot pin for the pump arm keeps wanting to slide out the right side of the main tube . been tapping it back in with a hammer but i'll need to do a pivot pin replacement sooner rather than later .  :-*

been thinking of something like something you suggested BDS , also been looking at some of the swinging ones . i like the swing one i seen someones thread on making it with empty Co2 cartridges . i was thinking about making one and just using a old table spoon , soup spoon and teaspoon

pivot pin replacement is in the top five things that need replacing with this gun
you can make one yourself if you have a dremel/rotary tool
mountainair has them for $5 the last i saw
do you have an adjustable piston?
Title: Re: my DBO kit arrived today !!!
Post by: DBOdude on August 20, 2013, 05:24:47 AM
thanks , i'll call tomorrow and check on the shipping . will this also need the holes drilled out to 3/16 inch ? i guess i'll go check ace hardware and southern states for something too . i'm surprised that neither lowes or homedepot had something in 3/16 though .

no FT setup yet , was gonna get that next month , but i may get the 1701P (PN# 2220-103) trigger , spring and order a solid hammer from mellon air instead .....  :-\

on my guns no drillin/reaming of anykind was needed. see if it will fit before doing any reaming
i know homedepot has 3/16 brass aluminum and steel i was goung to get some but it was long 4" lengths and all i need is 1" lengths
menards has them and i know ace carries them too
not hard to make with a dremel a few member have made them in the past
cut to size chuck it up in a drill/drillpress use a cutting wheel on the dremel cut the groves. the number of cutting wheels skacked will change the size of the o-ring needed or if you can tap it. thats an option
a solid pin is definitely a must as you can see
no more pounding

Not to hijack, but I still have to pound. I drilled (turned by hand) it out to 3/16" too. not sure where I went wrong but the pump arm flops around some.

did do anything to the pump lever? this part

if not it can stretch from having an improperly adjusted piston or hanging on it

Tater, did it take much "meat" out of the linkage hole when you used the drill bit?

If no, I'd guess it was already going egg-shape on you. What does it measure at?

a few updates ......
i wound up not drilling out to 1/4 inch and got a pivot pin from a.c.customparts . i got a 3/16 bit , but it went through the holes in the linkage and main tube without drilling and AC's pin went right in with no change to the stock pivot pin holes  . is it possible crosman has changed to a 3/16 roll pin ?

i also got a F/T valve from AC , waiting for him to make some more F/T pistons so i can get one to go with his valve . also got some MAC1 secret sauce so when i change them i'll clean and relube with it . also got some 30mm medium dovetail rings from MAC1 for my new scope .

took the CP 4-16x40 back to wally world and now have a leapers/utg 30mm 4-16x44 scope on it . love the scope , but don't care for the finger tightening thingies for the rings and didn't care for the looks with the little weaver to dovetail tab thingies under them . i have the wheel on mine and i'll admit it is a big scope and the wheel in combo with the stock rings and adapters under them looks really cluttered/busy on that side . changing to the 30mm medium dovetail rings helps tone that down some . the swat turret is tight and i'm very glad i went ahead and got the wheel , it makes focusing/changing parallax so easy !! it more than compensates for any detraction in looks IMO . heres a few pics with the initial ring/adapter setup ......

(http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab234/BOOTY-MONSTER/IMG_0188_zps54784534.jpg) (http://s867.photobucket.com/user/BOOTY-MONSTER/media/IMG_0188_zps54784534.jpg.html)

here's a couple with the new rings .

and one with the CP scope for comparing the size of the different scopes on the DBO

(http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab234/BOOTY-MONSTER/IMG_0186_zps622ffb3c.jpg) (http://s867.photobucket.com/user/BOOTY-MONSTER/media/IMG_0186_zps622ffb3c.jpg.html)

i like the new scope a lot . but keep in mind the leapers and centerpoint are the only real scopes i've used in decades . it looks great to me , love the size and spacing of the mil-dots and the side focus is sooooo nice . i did go out at dusk and as the sun went down the view got dimmer and dimmer (duh) but i could shoot ok with it for a while . but when it's dark (even with a "harvest moon") there is very little to be seen through the scope . shine a light on something at night though and it works great . didn't install the batteries to try the lighted reticle yet . and a question on that ..... if i put the batteries in and somehow forget they are in there can they leak and damage the scope or it's electronics ?

thats about it for now , gonna do a few cheap/freebie mods to the trigger , end plug/barrel band and may try extending the bolt ..... . but i'm gonna order a AC piston as soon as he puts them up for sale . :-*

I just ordered the same pin in black and I decided to measure my relatively new PC77 after reading your post. Crosman must have changed the diameter as mine measures 3/16 as well. One less thing I need to do when the pin arrives :-*

i have/had the first 1377's that came out and never had to drill anything to use a mellon pin which is 3/16 also
the only time drilling is needed imo is when you use the mellon bearing and i cant recall what size that is but i dont use it so it is a non-issue
glad you went the 3/16 way dbodude i have seen someone use a 1/4" pivot pin before but it the only time i have seen that one time.
your gun is coming together nicely

AC makes them in black ?

was just a $2 bit . i got it cause AC's add says " ...... Easy to install, all you have to do is drill out the pump pin holes to 3/16" because they are a bit undersized to begin with. ...... " no biggie  :)

thanks 1377x . it's gonna be a tool for me , nothing compared to many of the guns shown on this forum , some of which are IMHO truly works of art . shoot , i'd be scared to own or use some of them because honestly i'm a little clumsy sometimes . but i've done a good bit of lurking and asking questions and using the search function on the forum and hope/think i've made good parts and accessory choices so far . i do wish that 6-24 varmint deal had worked out though . i really don't use 6x or even 8x , i use 10x for 10 yards and looking at the back woodline at 16x i keep wondering what 24x would look like . LOL

The black pin was not from Ac Custom, but it is the same basic pin in black.

i think that from use the pivot hole opens, especially if its getting lots of use and from over adjusted pistons
the one thing i noticed i used to do was hang on the pump arm when pumping that probably helped make the hole bigger too. i stopped hanging on the arm and adjusted my piston properly then hole has stayed the same size for the last several years
even with a stock piston you can still stretch the hole

did do anything to the pump lever? this part
(http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/edf73/b53db8df-2616-4ab7-abba-53affd672ec5_zps10c70be0.jpg) (http://s613.photobucket.com/user/edf73/media/b53db8df-2616-4ab7-abba-53affd672ec5_zps10c70be0.jpg.html)

if not it can stretch from having an improperly adjusted piston or hanging on it

I haven't had it apart yet since I put the pin in but it's definitely the pump lever that is loose. I have no idea how to adjust the piston, but the forearm just barely stays closed.

Tater, did it take much "meat" out of the linkage hole when you used the drill bit?

If no, I'd guess it was already going egg-shape on you. What does it measure at?

I'm not sure of the measurement, but I don't believe it's getting egg-shaped though.

which piston do you have?
mellon's has a set screw loosen that turn it then check to see if the arm will still close. if you are using something like an ac piston then you loosen the nutturn the head same as the mellon
i have my piston adjusted just enough to keep the arm closed. if you over adjust it it will push the valve back damaging it and it will stretch out all the holes. pivot, grip frame and pump lever(pictured in your post) holes.

I still have the stock piston in it.

well about the only adjusting you can do with that is add a washer or o-ring under the pump cup
