Title: BEWARE!!
Post by: Trophyhunter49 on January 06, 2014, 11:21:10 PM
Beware of pellet prices!!  I have been buying pellets on Amazon.com. all last year for around 8.16 per tin of Crosman HPs and that was with free shipping with 35.00 purchase.  Now the same pellets are 14.95 !! This is just WRONG to have that much of a price incress in less than a month. The last ones I ordered was Dec 16 , price was 8.16 now 14.95 . Buy them somewhere else and lust pay the shipping!  Air Gun Depote and PA. have the deal where you get one free if you buy 3 or 4 tins so the free one kind of makes up for the shipping.
I know I'm just blowing off a little steam and I know ya'll don't mind , bscause we all do it at times. So off my soap box for now!! :) : ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D

Amazon itself is temporarily out of stock on CPHPs and is shunting the page to Outfitter Country.  If you click below the listing on the other vendors for the item, Amazon at $8.16 Prime is the first listing.

Or you just buy in bulk when places like PA offer free shipping AND 10% off ($100 min. order). I did this in early Dec. and although it seemed like a lot to spend on pellets, you can't beat the deal with every 4th tin free plus the discount. My pellet stash should last for quite a while... or at least until the next deal pops up.

Yes, that little "sold and ships from" icon says it all, they are diverting to a price-ier store that has stock, not exactly "kosher" but the disclosure is there if you can find it  :D

Have you tried Walmart?

All of this I do know ! The last lead smelter in the US. shut its doors the 1st of the year thanks to EPA. No lead means on pellets! The US. will have to start importing lead and that means a price incress! I now have about 70 tins of pellets .22 62 of .177. It just made me mad that they jumped the price that much!! >:(

In 2006 I told everyone I knew, buy bullets, powder, primers and brass. If you do not reload, buy ammo. Now look. We are worrying about pellets in 2014.  ??? ??? ??? ???

This is very true Mr. Duck !  I have always kept a stock pile of primers, bullets and powder, but I just got into the AG world about 2 yrs ago when I found CAPOF. It seems like everytime I go to WALLYWORLD I buy pellets and now CO2. My youngest sonkeeps asking me why I spend GOOD money on BB guns I tell him they are PELLET guns and when we no longer get PB ammo we can still hunt with the pellet guns!!

Since the vast majority of lead used in the US comes from recycled car batteries (which account for 80% of lead usage and 96% of which are recycled), the statement about "no lead" is pretty misleading.  Powder burner ammo manufacturers do not use virgin lead (see statements from Sierra, Hornady, etc.), which the lead smelter produced,  and many of them have stated specifically that closure of the smelter will have no effect on them at all.  I doubt that pellet manufacture will be affected, either.  Any price increase that we see will be a result of other factors (perhaps even pellet hoarding, just like the powder burner ammo shortage).

NRA agrees. (http://www.nraila.org/news-issues/articles/2013/12/us-ammunition-industry-to-survive-closure-of-lead-smelter.aspx)

Hay, wait a minute. I resemble that remark. I'm not hoarding. Hording is where you buy things and do not use them. Look and this. Does this look like I'm hording? ??? I'm replenishing my supply.LOL

With the exception of the pellets that are expended while hunting or controlling pests, airgunners should most definitely be using a pellet trap or backstop that allows for the recovery of spent pellets. Of course they can't be reused, but they can be recycled! I'm sure many already do this but I'm pretty sure that a great number of pellets (i.e. lead) are going back into the Earth where they are unlikely to ever being recovered. I'm pretty sure that this isn't a major environmental issue but more of a resource management issue. I know folks are saying "I don't shoot enough to make a difference." but as the number of airgun enthusiasts increases, there will be enough waste to make a difference! Bottom line, collect your spent pellets. Eventually, you'll have enough to make it worth your while to turn them in for cash or some other form of compensation. As the old saying goes--If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. Flex

Not here... not going to deal with the "EPA inquisition" and paperwork associated with bringing TSCA listed materials to the local scrap/metals guy. Copper, brass, alum and steel, fine... lead, no.

Here's some TSCA / EPA reading if you want some details  http://www.gibsondunn.com/publications/Documents/SabovichHearne-TheTSCALeadandTheDivisionOfTheHazardousBullet.pdf (http://www.gibsondunn.com/publications/Documents/SabovichHearne-TheTSCALeadandTheDivisionOfTheHazardousBullet.pdf)

I'm sure some folks do but... good bullet lead has the right amount of alloy elements like antimony and tin etc added to it so, the "alloy" of all the various brands and types of pellets you would start with is an unknown after the pellets are all mixed in the pot together for melting.

I concede that I am ignorant of the regulatory aspects of lead recycling with "Mr. Local Scrap Guy". I my case, I collect lead for "home casting purposes ;)". I agree with the fact lead of unknown purity is not always the best for casting but in the case of "just plinking" it works fine for me. While I don't know for sure, I'm guessing that there are a great many individuals that would be more than willing to relieve you of any 50# buckets of "you know what" without the burden of any pesky paperwork.

I've taken in some non ferrous metal for recycling lately and they just ask for a state issued photo ID and that they ship me a check instead of the cash they hand out for the scrap steel... was easy ~20lb of non ferrous metal got me $29... as opposed to the 92lb of steel that got me just under $8...

That said I ordered 8 of the cartons of Crosman pointed pellets (that's 10,000 pellets) from Pyramid a couple weeks ago because the prices on them were going up all over and that was the cheapest way I could find them shipped, and because they had them I ordered 4 cartons of the wadcutters from Walmart as they were under $11/carton... I don't need to buy pellets for a LONG time...

I save my spent pellets, and any other lead I can scrounge, and melt it down for casting sinkers and jig heads for another of my passions; fishing.

When you fish the rocky rivers and lakes around here, trust me, you're coming to need all the lead you can get!
I usually like lead split shots and egg sinkers.
The good thing about lead is that it is soft, making it perfect for shooting and hunting, because you need less stuff to stop it and its deforms easily in game!
