Title: I am buying a Chrony....The consensus is?
Post by: Red Harris on March 31, 2012, 06:05:37 AM
So,,,,I need a chrony.
I only shoot outdoors (sunny Southern California ).
I do, however shoot late in the afternoon when the sun is lower.
I'm not gonna Review guns on YouTube or anything like that.
I want a reliable tool that I don't have to Fuss with to get results.

I would like to Know what the consensus of the Forum members is.
Is it better to go simple and Cheap or pay for a few extra Features.
Here are the ones I am looking at......What do you think....

all i can say is i have an f-1 chrony it works great
i think if i could hook it up to a computer or printer it would make recording the numbers easier than having to write them down
the f-1 does what i need still thats the important part

$10 worth of parts off ebay and you can connect it to the pc easily. A usb to rs232/ttl PL2303 adaptor, a stereo jack (3.5mm) and some 2 core cable are all thats needed.

Free drivers off the internet, and either putty ssh software or a copy of ian pellents chrony software, which i found on waybackmachine.

Putty ssh will give you the velocities as theyre sent to the pc
chrony software will give you ft.lb & velocities.

If anyones interested ill do a quick guide.

A red Chrony, interface cable and Chrono Connect software is a fantastic setup. I connect my laptop to the Chrony and easily capture all shot strings.

What are the thoughts on the PS2?  Has anyone had much experience with them and how does the accuracy compare to what Red is looking at?  Link included below:

Pretty reasonable on price.

I have a combro cb-625 chronoscope + (third party usb cable + software). This one works well.
Never had an issue with light(s). Plug n' play & cheap.

seems i've no need to do a quick guide, someone already has

http://www.network54.com/Forum/79537/thread/1307299784/Chrony+PC+Interface+Cable+for+USB (http://www.network54.com/Forum/79537/thread/1307299784/Chrony+PC+Interface+Cable+for+USB)

the pin outs for the PL-2303 board are

GND connects to GND on the 3.5mm stereo jack plug
RXD connects to TIP on the 3.5mm Stereo Jack Plug
TXD connects to RING on the 3.5mm Stereo Jack

google pl-2303 drivers for the latest drivers.

when the PL2303 drivers are installed it will give you a COM Port address ie COM3, you may need to change this to COM1 or COM2

Go to CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / DEVICE MANAGER

find the PROLIFIC PL-2303 device, and you can change the com address in the settings, it should also be set at

4800bps
8 Data Bits
No Parity
1 Stop Bit

NOTE: I have this running on a windows xp machine, im not certain if it works on windows 7...

I have a copy of the Ian Pellant DOS program Chronys.exe if anyone would like a copy pm me,

Also I use really really old drivers for xp if the new ones don't work ill email those too.

chronys.exe is very basic but works well, i have a little experience with PuTTY SSH, which as in the link above only gives velocities.

UKStoo......
That is most excellent,,,,,Thank You for posting that!

I have  just ordered the Shooting Chrony F1.
I dont see the need for anything more than basic features.
But, if that changes in the future, I can use UKStoo's info to mod it.....

There was a guy on here that made some software and cables to send all your shooting data to your computer.  I have some and it works absolutely great.  It will record the data as long as you shoot and give all the needed data particulars.
