Old "BIC" donates to the cause (I hope)

I found a pretty old "BIC" lighter in my Winter Emergency Bag that I keep in the back of my SUV. It's function was replaced with a magnesium fire starter but didn't take the BIC out of the bag. I didn't think much about it until I started reading how folks were "harvesting" springs & o-rings to use for airgun modding. This one doesn't have the adjustable flame option so I knew that it didn't have the o-ring that many use to upgrade the transfer port.

I was hoping tho to find a spring that could be used as a safety spring. The butane had long since leaked out so I proceeded with the destructive harvest. Initially, I only came up with two springs (above the ruler in the photo), neither of which looked like they would work as a replacement for the safety spring.

As the destruction continued, a long slender spring (the one below the ruler in the photo), flew out of the center of the reservoir. It looks a bit long, maybe 2x too long, but that may mean I'll get 2 spare safety springs out of the deal.

Oh no it had the adjustable flame they are worth money

Stock safety spring measures .090 outside diameter and .325" long. That's between 5/16 and 21/64".
Should be able to get 3 safety springs out of that flint spring.
Just in case you ever need one, the safety spring is the same Crosman part number as the shoulder stock quick release button spring.

I tore apart a bic earlier and was down when i didn`t find any orings now i know why now only buying those cheap ones to get the o-rings lol

Yes the o-rings are in cheapie lighters. Safety springs can be found in adjustable cheap lighters.

I took the springs out of a lighter earlier this week, but none of the springs in it would work for me. I called my order i for a couple springs and the little "BB" for the safety, I even got a new safety coming.

Now if I can just figure out how to get them installed without loosing them again!!!

I guess not all lighters are created equal...

Just remove the frame and install them from the top it's easy and they wont pop out.

X2! With the trigger frame OFF of the air tube, there is no pressure on the spring so it won't go anywhere. I won't take the cover plate off of any of my guns until I get the trigger frame off of the tube and I won't put the safety spring back in until after I put the cover back on the frame and usually just before I put the frame back on the tube. It works VERY well EVERY time!!
