Scope for a 2289

I ordered the Dooms day kit but haven't gotten it yet.  The first thing I want to do is get the steel receiver and a scope.  I want something usable and I don't mind paying for quality within reason.  I'm thinking a rifle scope in 4-6 power.  What are you guys using as far as scopes and mounts?  What scopes should I avoid?  Where is the best place to source them?  Thanks!

Scope choice has a lot to do with how you plan to use the gun. I like AO scopes for airguns because of the short ranges at which they shoot. I also prefer reticles with multiple aim points. Buy the best glass you can afford.

You really can't go wrong with a UTG/Leapers or a Hawke scope. Basis UTG mounts work very well and don't bust the bank.

A few decent scopes I've owned in the past that I would recommend include:

Hawke Sport HD 3-9x40
UTG Bug Buster 3-9x32
Barska 2-7x32

PyramidAir is top notch and so is amazon.com..Got amazon prime for my purchases and they are fast, just 2 day shipping for eligible items..

UTG mounts are fine but if you are willing to stretch your budget a bit go for BKLs..I use them on all my airguns..No need for the dual strap, the single one is fine enough.

Like Mr. Miller said Leapers/Hawke scopes are a good buy but you may want to try this one..

MTC/Optisan scopes are very nice, I had one, a Viper to be exact..

Ok, here's a bug buster with mounts for $90.  Would this work?  Will the provided mounts give me enough room to load?

Good deal on the scope & rings combo. I am sure you will have enough clearance to load once you get the hang of it. If you really feel there is not enough room, the cost is low to replace the mounts with a set of high rings.

If this is your first Crosman steel breech, you will inevitably be asking us why pellets may hang up or not load smoothly. It is just the nature of a breech designed for multiple calibers. Pellets in .177 are particularly susceptible to tumbling in the loading port, but .22 pellets do load much better. Like anything else, you will come to know your gun, how to load it most efficiently and what it's capabilities (and yours) are. Enjoy the ride!

The link for the bug buster shows it comes with the mounts but I don't think they'll work on the steel receiver.  I believe it needs an adapter or a different set of rings.

I don't mine getting a good scope because it may end up on a Marurder  ;)

Like Crossliner said Bkl's are kinda pricey but you get what you pay for.I went with the low priced rings because I am price conscious(cheap :D ;D)but I won't skimp on rings anymore and only buy Bkl rings.

I went (apparently) cheap and got the Centerpoint 3-9×32. Works descent. Online for under $50. Slightly more in the store, but have a really good return policy. Plus it comes with mounts.

Finally... Got me a crosman bug out 2289

Sometimes you do get a great deal for a little bit of money and that is great.I will try to save money on a scope I just don't get cheap rings anymore.I have a 4x16 Centerpoint on my marauder but I ditched the centerpoint rings I think that is what they are and went with Bkls don't know if that helped or not because I haven't shot it yet still holding steady at 2,500 psi though. :( :( :(I am not saying inexpensive is bad sometimes its great just not always. I have had some bad results from Leapers mounts, but the scopes are great.

I'm hoping that you're getting your Doomsday Kit from WalMart! Their current sale price of ~$75 is darn good IMHO. I paid ~$90 for mine (which i thought was decent). I've seen them as low as $70 but not too often.

The steel breech is (and I think most here will agree) a "must have". Crosman sells their version for ~#35.

Personally, I'm +/- RE: telescopic sights on a carbinesque air gun with a 12" barrel. I would bet that most folks that have this model shoot at targets <100 feet distant and more likely <50 feet away. Just sayin'. That being said, I DO have a cheapo Gamo 4x20TV on my 2289 ???. It was a take off from a garage sale find. So the price was right. ;). I've tried other sighting devices on this air gun, the stock sights, Crosman & Daisy "RedDot" type sights and another "el cheapo" NcStar 4x scope. The Gamo is just the current trial. What I really think I want is the Crosman LPA MIM open sight. One thing that's for sure, any scope that hangs over the portion of the breech where the pellets are loaded will interfere with loading pellets. Everyone's experience differs here and some folks even have trouble loading air guns that are unobstructed ???

Like others have said, scope selection depends on many things: proposed use, distance to target, level of disposable income and most importantly personal preference. Not always an easy choice.

RE: the mounts, the Crosman steel breech requires the use of rings designed for 11mm dovetail grooves (the standard on most .22 cal rifles). There are adaptors to make the steel breech 11mm dovetail compatible with Weaver/Picatinny mounting rings.

Do some more research, ask some more questions, send some PMs if you want more details. Everyone here has an idea on what they "think" is best. Bottom line is you have to make your own decision. Good luck :-*! Flex

Very good Flex.  Yes, I got mine from Walmart, $74.17.  I ordered the steel breech from Crosman, $35 then $14.00 shipping.  After a little research I found the 3-9 Bugbuster for $79 here:

http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/16-SCP-M392AOIEWQ

Now I need mounts.  I've seen some guys going with high mounts to ease the loading process, I'm not sure what to get yet, maybe Walmart has weaver mounts, not sure.

After doing a bunch of research on the 2289 I accidently came accross the Maurauder.  I am totally impressed with that gun and I bet I end up with one.  20 years ago I bought the very expensive HW 77.  I think I had nearly $1,000 in that set up.  I never warmed up to that thing mostly because it was so damn HUGE at over 9 pounds.  I ended up trading it for an International Scout.  Anyway the Maurauder is 7 pounds.

Do you think this might be a good mount that works?  It's the high style to give me more loading room.

Glad that you got yours thru WalMart! Good price. I forgot to mention it (Targettgii didn't) BUT ALWAYS order Crosman stuff by phone thru the Custom Shop Parts Dept. Most of the time (not always tho) S&H will be $4.00 instead of the website based ordering system "calculated" S&H. Live & Learn.

RE: the Bug Buster scope. Awesome looking scope! Lots of features (prolly more than you'll EVER need). If it's what you want then go for it. I'm not sure but the description on the CTD site makes it sound like mounting rings are included. If so, they will be of the Weaver/Picatinny type as this scope looks like it's designed for the AR platform. WalMart does carry 1" rings for mounting scopes on guns with 11mm dovetails grooves (like the Crosman steel breech).

The problem I see is that there is very little adjustment potential on such a short scope. The steel breech only has ~3 1/4" of space to mount the rings. The scope description, while not specific, makes me think that it is more of a long eye relief type scope. If so, you'll probably be better off getting an adaptor that lets you mount a Weaver/Picatinny rail atop the 11mm dovetail AND allows for some degree of forward placement of the scope.

Check out this link for an example of what i'm talking about  http://www.amazon.com/UTG-Profile-Airgun-Picatinny-Adaptor/dp/B001CJ67E6/ref=pd_ys_sf_s_3375251_a1_1_p?ie=UTF8&refRID=1PBY9NNFSB72H0Y9RXAD

I hope you can get your components married up and start havin' some fun with your new air gun.
