How is Muzzle Energy Tested/Calculated?

Muzzle Velocity seems simple enough, with chronograph, but what about Energy, in joules or whatever?
Is it a calculation based on using pellet specifications and velocity?
Or how tested?
Sorry if this has been addressed elsewhere.

Pellet weight and FPS are the 2 factors. Not exactly sure of the formula. I have it written down somewhere, but don't ask where.
I use Energy Calculator V1.0 A search on the web will bring it up for a free download. Simple to use.

      The formula is (velocity * pellet weight)*velocity/450240  so from one of my spreadsheets 732*14.3*732/450240=17.01ft.lbs I keep the formula in a spread sheet that calculates the average velocity, energy, max deviation, and standard deviation. PM me and I'll send you a copy of the spreadsheet, just enter your numbers, and it does the rest for you. If you need to add more shots, just adjust the formula to account for the additional shots.
