Crosman 600 problems

I just picked up a Crosman 600 for $40.00 and it seems to have issues. It hold pressure forever but seems to jamb up a lot. When I got it it came with a bunch of flat nosed pellets and the guy I got it from says it worked fine. Could it be the pellets? Any suggestions on what pellets to use? It also seems like the cocking lever on the side is a little sloppy. You can push it backwards to cock it but then it just slides forward again but doesn't seem to lock in place. Is it supposed to be that way?

I use wadcutter pellets in my quite often with no problems.  Have also used Crosman Premier Ultra magnum pellets.

My cocking lever on the left side is fairly tight, certainly not real loose.

Don't think mine locks in place but then it has been a few months since I ran some pellets through it.  I'll go check it.

Thanks. I'm anxious to see how yours works.

I rebuilt mine at the weekend, the lever is held by a screw which pulls the hammer back. It doesn't actually connect to anything and
can slide back and forth. The screw adds tension and makes it harder to slide, to loose and it flaps about. There should also be a tiny spring
with a guide and a ball bearing to help the slide too (which sits near the rear bottom edge of the lever itself). The dove rail is what holds the
lever onto the gun and the screw stops it sliding off/out.

It's an amazing piece and taking it apart shows the genius that designed it.

It is also a grandaddy to the 22XX range, the inner tube is the same bar some different slots n' holes.

I've been told it's one of the most difficult Crosman pistols to work on. I've rebuilt quite a few but I'm not sure I'm ready for that one. I'll keep playing with it and see if I need to make a few minor adjustments.

This here website should give you plenty of tips and guidelines and confidence to tackle the 600.

BTW the service manual says once cocked it should be returned to the resting position and not left in the cocked position.
I think it would cause the screw to slam and potentially wear/damage the valve/hammer long term.

I only found this out the other day but it makes sense!  :)

Not leaving it in the cocked position makes sense or which part?

Not sure if that's a typo Carl but the part in question is the thumb slider to cock the gun.

Pull it back so it cocks and return it to the original pos.  :-*

Your are correct in that it is a very fragile piece and I can see that moving it forward after cocking will help prolong its life.

Thanks for the info.

Yup, I noticed on opening up mine it had a teeny weeny bit of damage in that area.
Now I know perhaps why! (Not blaming you!  ;D ;D ;D   I am eternally grateful for it!)

I have some more news on my 600 but I'll go find my thread for that!  ;)

I had a good shooting session with my 600 today.
3 powerlets and 100 or so pellets.
It pays to have the allen keys with you at the range.
I use Daisy Precision Max .22 Wadcutter pellets, they have a flat nose and the right length for the 600 but sometimes they are deformed.
Look at them before loading. The bent ones will jam the loading mechanism.

That 600 Bible is good, there is also a 600 manual on the Crosman website. The exploded view and parts list helped me fix my 600.

Precision Pellet had the linkage part I needed to bring my gun back to life for $12.

I am toying with the idea of getting a left handed grip or doing something to make the gun more ambidextrous.

But I don't want to modify this fine antique, right now it is "stock to the block"

Coopieclan

I am still trying to make my 600 ambidextrous.
I tried to put grips from my Crosman 2240 on it today.
They don't really fit and they made the grip area HUGE.
Too thick to hold.
