As I understand it the blue finish on older airguns, and new ones for all I know, is really paint not blueing. How do you clean the outside of your older airguns without damaging the finish?

I use WD-40 to clean most of my old guns.  Works great for what it is.

I use a mild compound like a swirl remover and carefully rub out the paint on the older guns and finish with a coat of Carnuba wax. If the paint is totally trashed then it strip and repaint. I'm not a collector, I like a cosmetically good looking gun and like to shoot em. Collectors will have a different point of view.
