Does it hurt the seals on a gun to use transmission fluid on them?

Nope, doesn't hurt at all. A good substitute for Pelgunoil.

Automatic transmissions are full of o-rings and seals. It lubricates as well as cleans.

But non detergent sae30 lawnmower oil is what pellgun oil is, so why not use that?

I know little of oil except for timber and scooters (and that is just a case of buying a 2 or a 4 stroke oil from the station).
I do know people say as said a 30W ND motor oil can be used and now lawnmower oil.

The trouble I have is when I goto the shop I see a few likely candidates but they all say with additives and things that help.
My concern is am I buying something quite the opposite!

Could you point me in the right direction for a recommended oil that is UK based? Which brand.  :-[

Lawnmower, car, anything!

ive never had any trouble using just standard sae 30, as long as its not semi or fully synthetic, the lot i got came with my mower, it just says sae 30 mower oil.

some air compressors use sae30 too, have a look on ebay then just pop to the shops,

asda and tesco sell mower oil come springtime when they have all the gardening stuff in.

Thanks I'll have a look at some lawnmower oil then.  :)

All the ones I have seen don't say ND on any mention of detergent but the additives and stuff says otherwise?

One of those long discussed topics  LOL.
It ain't like it used to be but, eh, it's do.

What's funny is that the guys on the bike forums do the same thing. Always trying to find a replacement for the specialty lubricants.

I always lube my tube and associated parts. I also do the same with my airguns.  ;D

Yes it is an age old story, the perfect oil. My issue has been that in UK shops I haven't found one yet that says ND or non detergent.
Or they say additives but not specifying exactly what they've added. Not many say 30W either. Or they are synthetic/semi.

Why is synthetic/semi oil an issue? Isn't it meant to mimic a true oil?

Lawnmower oil maybe my next attempt. The funny thing is 1 small tube of pellgunoil has lasted me all year! Not bad, eh?!

One I have seen is for old classic cars specifically designed for cold weather with no additives or detergent.
It is a mineral and not a synthetic/semi oil. Could be a winner...

What do you reckon?!

5 litres = lifetime supply!

BTW 4 stroke scooter oil looks very much the same as pellgunoil. From a optical point of view. LOL

What about USP mineral oil? I've got a bottle of that sitting in one of my kitchen cabinets. I use it to lubricate my sharpening stone. Can't imagine that it would have any detergents since it's medical grade and it's CHEAP! I think I paid $0.88 for a decent sized bottle at Wal-Mart.
