moly treatment

I was wondering if any one here has ever tried a moly (molybdenum disulfide) treatment in the bore of their pumper or CO2 guns?  If you have, what were the results...any accuracy or velocity improvements or negative results?

Back before I had to sell every gun I owned I treated the bores of my .22-250, .30-06, rimfires and even black powder rifles.  Yes...even my rimfires and black powder guns.  I did it the right way by heating the barrels first, either in a warm oven if they would fit or with a heat gun, then I would run a bronze brush (wrapped with a patch for a tight fit and to hold the moly paste) in the bores 25-30 strokes then push a patch on a jag thru to remove the excess.

I did it for velocity gain and to reduce copper and lead fouling, did it in the black powder rifles to keep rusting to a minimum.  In almost every case I would also get some gain in accuracy.

I know airguns are a completely different animal since there's no powder or copper to deal with and the lead in pellets is softer than rimfire bullets, etc.  I was just curious to see if anyone has tried it for velocity and/or accuracy improvements.

I have tried it on my Stag AR 5.56, because I mostly shoot .22 LR through a targetmaster conversion kit.  Cleaning the lead out of the barrel and gas tube  is very important but man what a pain!  To clean the lead out after a .22 lr shooting session I have used:  lead away cloths, "chore boy" copper pad strands, every chemical you can name.  It is a real PITA and almost negates the huge amount of money you save shooting .22 LR.  So after my last session I happened to have some moly paste, and i heated the barrel with my heat gun and ran some down the bore.  Should probably do it again for good measure!  Anything that might make cleaning that bore easier I am willing to try.

As for pellet guns, I have tried it on my Beeman Grizzly too.  The barrels are detachable so I just heat the barrel with a heat gun and push some moly through the bore on a nylon brush.  So far I haven't seen the results - to shoot I have to drive 40 miles - but at worst, all I will be doing is cleaning out moly paste.

Most people will advise you against it for air guns.  The logic is that the pellet grips the rifling in the bore on a relatively small surface area already (compared to a bullet) also the FPS is much less.  So if you make the bore  slicker, the rifling may not grab the pellet sufficiently and impart a consistent spin to it thus affecting accuracy.   All I can say is it is probably worth a try, if you have a chrono to show yourself (and us) the results so much the better.  Since I tried moly in the bore 2 weeks ago on my 1322 I have not seen any increase or decrease in accuracy - still the occasional fliers but usually pretty accurate - but i don't have a chronograph to tell me anything more.

If you try moly and find your gun LESS accurate, obviously all you have to do is use some wd-40 or something and clean it out.

i clean my barrels with eezox.my intratec tec-22 was shooting shotgun patterns it was the first tec-22 that did that.every other shoot great for what it isnt.anyhow i cleaned the barrel ,it looked like i was pulling bullets out of it.no wonder it was shooting bad.i put a bunch of eezox on the bore snake ran it through again another bullet came out.i put some eezox on a patch ran it through a few time patch is clean.let the gun set for a few days ran another patch through to remove the excess eezox, then went to the range.i use cci blazer .22lr it has no copper coating/jacket.ran about 300 rounds through it plus some sub sonics and hyper velocity ammo.got home ran a patch through the barrel.wow its nearly clean.ran the bore snake through it came out clean.

from what i read about ag barrels and moly
is the moly does something with the moisture in the air and it makes the barrels bore rust
ill stick to using eezox.i do want to try some frog lube, read some good test reports on it.

1377 thanks for the information about moly causing rusting in the bore...in that case i'm going to clean it out of my bore.

I have heard raves about the great lubricating qualities of Froglube on every gun forum and wanted to try it.  But it is so expensive (I saw a 4 oz bottle of the CLP in the gun shop today for...$25) I'm holding off.

Thanks for the info Ed,  ;). I don't think I will go that route then.  The factory barrel on my 1377 is putting PolyMags on top of each other at 10 yards (my close range huntin' mod) so I'll leave well-enough alone and not screw anything up.  :-*

I cut the heads off Q-tips and shoot them thru
First one I put 3 or 4 drops of CLP then shoot dry ones until they come out clean
Heard match shooters never clean their barrels - not sure if thats true but also heard
you don't need to mess around unless its not shootin good  ???

thats how i feel about
one barrel i never cleaned well over 3000 pellets probably more like 5000 never a problem with accuracy, these are not firearms which are subject to lead and carbon fouling mainly due to heat
when i first get a barrel i clean it with EEZOX which is by far the best clp lube i have used.it has the best corrosion and rust inhibiting properties that i have seen.when i sold a barrel i have run a lot of pellets through recently it was so clean, the patch came out the way it went in.no bs
i highly recommend it for those who want to keep their guns rust free.as a matter of fact you will be surprised how much rust is on those new guns.it doesnt hurt the finish either
like the idea if shooting q-tip tips ;) gotta try it one day

after having one of my disco valves corrode i treated it with eezox and since its a synthetic it shouldnt hurt o-rings and so far my o-rings show no sign of degeneration after i treated them a few months ago

last december i re-polished my 1377 because it had rust on it.after it was polished i treated it with eezox well i ended up in the hospital for 3months straight no leaving.i left my gun in a spot it would be food for rust.i did get to go on a visit home until the 4th month.i think the first thing i did was went straight for 1377 only to find out it still looked the same as the day i polished it
all i could do is say wow.i tried rust inhibitors, flitz mothers none of which made for good rust inhibitors but eezox saved the day.
its not a bad idea to wipe down the gus after handling with eezox either.out of habit i wipe down my guns before putting them away nowdays

I normally don't clean my barrels unless there is an accuracy problem.  My PRod has never been cleaned.  From the day I got it it has shot the Crosman premier HP, FT domed, pointed, JSB 14.3, 18.1, RWS super points, Benajmin HP all acurately.  I must have gotten lucky but no cleaning until the accuracy starts to go away.  I also have a bad habit of shooting something as soon as I finish building it.  Then remembering That I didn't clean the bore!  I do work the crown and lead though and yes still forget to run a patch through the bore!

if you put eezox in your barrel or on your guns rust will be a thing of the past
