You & I and many others think the same way.  I don't know how much, if any, it does help but all my plastic breeches have a set screw.  Only sure it can't hurt anything.

Since I learned that trick a while back I've been adding an 8-32x1/8" set screw to all my plastic breechs, which I am using quite a bit.  It does seem to add some good stability and the plastic breechs really do load very easy.

This should be a new "first mod".  I think I will do this on one of my new unopened 2240's after checking velocity without the screw first.

Do you have any velocity results yet before putting a set screw into the plastic breech and after?

Tommy

I have been working on research with the'' Search''  feature here at CAPOF.  Sifting through a lot of threads for info for modifying a Crosman 2240 for accuracy first.  Later some power and keeping accuracy.

CraigH

Tommy,

You will be doing A LOT of sifting   :)    Even now I find new (to me) things.

On your plastic breech set screw question,  this has not been a priority.  I would say though that there would be better, more consistent accuracy and only very little velocity increase, but again perhaps more consistent.

Tommy,

Here are a couple of pictures showing another way to add stability to the 2240 barrel to improve accuracy.  Adding one or two additional barrel bands is a cheap way to stabilize the barrel.

Or you could use this. I place it next to the breech ....

Yep I have three of them and they work really great but are also expensive.  Whereas most folks got a few of the Crosman OEM bands laying around from having replaced them with better alternatives.  So if you are on the cheap the OEM bands are an excellent choice.

I have 2 extra barrel bands that I don't use, I replaced mine with with brass and aluminum.

Build a shooting bench today, not good enough for pictures, just out of material I had laying around.
