I dont plan on mounting optics just plan on shooting open sights, im sure trigger work will be needed, but is the steel breech really needed? how will accuracy suffere without it?

Steel breech is optional if you plan to use the open sights.

You will have a much more stable, and secure barrel which will make the pistol more accurate.

Not only does it look nice but a steel breech will keep your barrel nice and tight and just beef up the gun overall. Also if you  ever want to put a scope or red dot you wont have worry about the barrel twisting from the extra weight on the barrel. As far as needed a steel breech no you dont need it, i have a few stock 22XXs and 13xxs with the plastic breech and there fine shooters.

Welcome Howie,
I would opt for the steel breech just for the  to the barrel stability but in addition, the steel breech will give you the option of much more finely adjustable sights than the OEM rear sight which is about the only thing that will fit on that plastic breech unless you custom make a rear sight to fit it yourself but if you like it like it is, shoot it.
The trigger is what really needs modding as it is too rough and has too heavy of a pull.  This can be easily and cheaply done to the 2240 by changing out the sear spring after you smooth up all of the parts' contact points and get rid of the excess play in both the trigger and sear.  A better but more expensive option is using a trigger frame and group from the Marauder Pistol because it has a fully adjustable 2-stage trigger and fits right on with only a couple of minor mods to the gun.

Jerry is so right "The trigger is what really needs modding" it will improve accuracy for sure.

Whoa, none of us planned on all the mods available :) Lust took over and forced us! 1701 grip frame assembly instead od trigger work, Steel breech, custom grips, reworked valve and transfer port, longer barrel (possibly in different a caliber), assortment of hammer springs, power adjuster, Tri-Wing CO2 cap, trigger shoe, 18 differant brands and weights of pellets, cases of Co2 powerletts, bulk fill, shoulder stock, expensive AO optics. That's what you have to look forward once the disease infects you. ;D

ps: I probably left out some things, I tired from typing!

lmao
no
steel breech isnt necessary neither is any of the other mods.they are a personal choice and the gun can be shot accurately as is
with the barrel band on the gun it helps make the barrel more stable

A tuner would likely have to charge you more than the price you paid for the gun to do the simple work involved in a basic trigger group tune. A simple polishing of the articulating surfaces and lubrication is an easy job. I think a very good item for you to consider is the 22xx/17xx Pistol Trigger Kit from TKO Airguns (http://www.tko22.com/). This replacement spring and guide provides a smoother, light trigger pull, and would be the best $14 you spend this year.

X1 to this.....it's something you can do yourself and if you do get stuck on it, a few pics and a post on this forum will get you straightened out. Good helpful people here. The trigger is the first thing you need to address even if it is just polishing and shimming.

And for your original question, I like the stock breech, that is if you are going to stay with the stock sites. After a time, you may want to go a bit further, but to have fun shooting there is no need. And after all, having fun is what it is all about. Me, I have as much fun tearing into a pistol as I do shooting one. That's me!

I agree, the 2240 is a fine gun as standard.

Very easy to work on though. So don't worry about that side of it.

Me I like pulling them to bits and playing bit it's not everyone's idea of fun.

Main thing is to enjoy which I am sure you will.

In my opinion, get yourself a 1399 sholder stock, some cheap pellets and 40 12g carts from Walmart. Sit down and have some FUN!!!
Here is the sholder stock.

Plus, once you make the first mod, that's when the bug gets a hold. It never stops after just the one mod  ;)
